The UN-recognized International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11, promotes full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Despite progress, women still account for only ~30% of researchers worldwide, with significant disparities across regions and disciplines. Historically, women's entry into science was met with substantial barriers. The first woman known to have made a significant contribution to science was Hypatia of Alexandria in the 4th century, a philosopher and mathematician. The 18th and 19th centuries saw pioneering women who often conducted their research unofficially or faced significant opposition. In the 20th century, women scientists like Marie Curie, (2 Nobel Prizes!) who was pivotal in physics and chemistry, and Rosalind Franklin, whose work was crucial to understanding the structure of DNA, demonstrated the critical contributions women can make across various scientific fields. Only about 3% of Nobel Laureates in Physics, Chemistry, and Physiology or Medicine are women. This highlights ongoing gender disparities in the recognition and valorization of scientific contributions. Globally, access to science education for girls remains uneven. In several countries girls are significantly less likely to receive a science-based education. This day is a reminder of the work still needed to achieve gender equality in scientific fields. The Chinese New Year, aka Spring Festival, marks the beginning of the lunar new year and is the most significant Chinese holiday. Rooted in mythology, it's said to have originated from the ancient fight against the mythical beast Nian, with the use of firecrackers and red decorations symbolizing luck and prosperity to ward off evil spirits. It has been celebrated for over 3,500 years, evolving from sacrificial ceremonies to the gods at the year's end for good harvests. Today, it initiates with the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February and lasts until the full moon, encompassing generally a 15-day period filled with various rituals and festivities, culminating in the Lantern Festival. Around 1/4 of the world’s population participates. Family reunions are central to the celebrations, with millions traveling home in one of the world's largest annual human migrations, known as Chunyun. Practices include thorough house cleaning to sweep away bad fortune, decorating homes with red lanterns and couplets, exchanging red envelopes (hongbao) containing money for luck, and enjoying lavish feasts with symbolic dishes, such as fish served whole (including head and tail) symbolizing a prosperous start and finish to the year. Each year is named after an animal, believed to influence personality traits and fortune, and associated with an element. 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon. The Carnival of Brazil, February 10-14 in 2024, has its origins in European colonial traditions, particularly Portuguese entrudo festivals, enriched by African and indigenous influences. It's a festivity that epitomizes Brazil's cultural diversity, with its peak expressions in cities like Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Recife, and Olinda. It has existed since 1723. Its signature samba music and dance reflect African heritage, while the masquerade balls and street parties have European roots. At the "blocos", street parties, locals and tourists celebrate with music, dance, and costumes. There is immense preparation and community involvement. Samba schools work year-round to prepare their performances, involving communities in the creation of costumes and floats, and rehearsal of dances and songs. This communal effort underscores the festival's significance as a cultural expression and a generator of social cohesion. Rio's Carnaval, the largest of the world, has 2 million participants daily. It is famous for its Sambadrome parades, showcases samba schools competing with elaborate floats and costumes. Despite its festive nature, it also offers a stage for social commentary, with themes addressing political and social issues through samba lyrics and parade themes. This multifaceted celebration combines joy, resistance, and cultural expression, making it a profound reflection of Brazilian society. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Carnival Art&Text supported by ChatGPT.

Celebrating National Women Physicians Day, we honor the legacy and achievements of women in medicine. Since Elizabeth Blackwell’s U.S. medical degree in 1849, women have been groundbreaking leaders in the field. This day, established on February 3, commemorates the birth of Blackwell and is a reminder of the ongoing journey towards equality in medicine. In the US, historical feats are numerous, from the 1st African-American female physician, Rebecca Lee Crumpler in 1864, to today being 60% of physicians under the age of 35. Surveys reveal there are 291,655 female physicians, many in primary care, championing holistic health. Women physicians are predominantly found in specialties focusing on children, women, and families, with the highest percentages in pediatrics (65%), obstetrics and gynecology (60.5%), pediatric hematology/oncology (55.7%), and child and adolescent psychiatry (54.6%). However, they remain a significant minority in specialties like orthopedic surgery (5.9%), thoracic surgery (8.3%), and neurological surgery (9.6%). The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to 13 remarkable women since 1901. On this day, we celebrate women's indispensable contributions and the diverse perspectives they bring to healthcare, improving patient outcomes and transforming the field. https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/women-physician-day.html https://bit.ly/49wm10E https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_medicine Art&Text supported by ChatGPT.

Black History Month stands as a profound period of reflection and celebration, honoring the significant contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans. Originating in 1926 as a week-long observance by Carter G. Woodson, it was expanded to a full month in 1976, underlining the importance of recognizing Black Americans' central role in U.S. history. Throughout history, African Americans have made invaluable contributions across all sectors of society. In science, Dr. Patricia Bath revolutionized ophthalmology with her invention of the Laserphaco Probe in 1986, significantly advancing treatment for cataract patients. In literature, Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Beloved" in 1988 explores the African American experience with profound depth. In civil rights, the tireless activism of figures like Martin Luther King Jr., whose leadership during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom marked pivotal moments in the struggle for civil rights, has left an indelible mark on the fabric of American society. The number of Black-owned businesses keeps rising, currently 140k+. The educational gap between blacks and whites and many other inequalities unfortunately still exist. This Month is a call to action for all to commit to equity, inclusion, and justice, to continue the work towards a more equitable society.
