At the Pistoia Alliance Conference "Collaborate, Innovate, Educate" in Boston, Massachusetts, we presented the Identification of Medicinal Products (IDMP) Ontology (IDMP-O). The IDMP-O collaboration has grown from the original 4 to 11 Pharma companies, and includes additional partners for project management, ontology engineering, and an ontology development environment, under the umbrella of the Pistoia Alliance, a not-for-profit member-driven consortium for life sciences. The basis for the IDMP-O are the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Identification of Medicinal Products (IDMP) standards for the unique identification of drug products. The IDMP Ontology provides a universal product data model as a backbone for the pharmaceutical industry. It harmonizes diverse perspectives on medicinal products in an innovative, ontological approach, thus allowing quick answers to e.g., which pharmaceutical products contain titanium dioxide. The IDMP Ontology enables answers to product-related questions that bridge across Clinical Development, Supply Chain Management and Data Sciences. In this way, the IDMP-O effectively bridges the gap between people, processes, and systems. Presenters: Sheila Elz from Bayer; Max Fink and Sophie Zakrzewski from Boehringer Ingelheim, and Heiner Oberkampf from Accurids.
