The role has its roots in the taverns of the Middle Ages. By the 18th century, the profession became more recognized, especially in England and America, where taverns and pubs played a pivotal role in social life. The term "bartender" emerged in the US in the 19th century. The Prohibition era (1920-1933) in the U.S. had a significant impact on bartending, pushing it underground into speakeasies, where bartenders became crucial in crafting cocktails to mask the taste of poorly made illegal alcohol.
