The R&D Digital Fluency Program (DFP) is supporting you with learning offerings to build up competencies and further skillsets around digital technologies to enable a competitive and digitally literate organization. At the Digital Fluency Program, we set ourselves apart by offering learning opportunities created by your peers who understand the unique challenges you face in your job. Our tailored approach focuses on real-life use cases, taking our training far from generic and providing you relevant and impactful skill development. In 2020 we, a small team of four people, started our journey with the DFP as part of the R&D Digital Roadmap. Since technologies are ever evolving and impacting our work environment it is more important than ever to foster a culture of continuous learning and enable future opportunities. Thus the DFP learning portfolio includes something for everyone, regardless of your level of knowledge: It offers general awareness programs to enhance basic digital literacy, self-learning pathways on data analysis & visualization and the ability to access online courses like Coursera via the Digital Curriculum. The team ensured the learning objective was met by piloting newly developed learning programs, making use of cross-functional development, and incorporated R&D specific components prior to a broader roll-out in the organization.

Within DS&AI the Product Owner Hub team, POH, is here to drive the impact of digital products in R&D via a product-centric approach. We conduct this in a hub-and-spoke setting in close collaboration with our R&D colleagues and IT teams and we aim to increase the cross-functional and data-centric mindset throughout the organizations. Our team will establish a dynamic, holistic view on the R&D digital landscape through transparent and value-based digital product roadmaps. We will employ “total cost of ownership” principles that will allow us to better grasp the full cost of digital activities and systems for Bayer – and map this against the expected value. This should allow us to make jointly well-informed decisions about future digital investments investments closely working with our IT colleagues. Artwork created using Stable Diffusion.

Hubble is a pioneering data hub that continuously integrates and enriches terabytes of external scientific textual data to support insight generation along the R&D value chain. It opens opportunities for statistical analyses, large-scale text-mining and other data science methodologies to tease out important details and detect trends within e.g., patents, scientific literature, and grants. The Hubble platform is available Bayer-wide, and offers API access for data scientists. This allows large scale, programmatic analysis as well as integration into processes and platforms. Hubble is a cornerstone of our digital transformation journey within R&D. It serves many users, systems and processes with key data & analyses by answering ~2 million queries per week. We continue to extend the platform to best support insight generation and scientific decision making with a precision medicine focus. For more information contact: Astrid Rheinländer.

Recent focus has been on streamlining and optimizing the clinical operations system landscape. To support the initiative, our key business capabilities related to clinical operations are consolidated on one core platform: Gemstone. Gemstone is a Software as a Service provided by Veeva and contains modules of their Vault Clinical suite. Where possible the system remains as close to "out of the box" as possible to align with industry standards and to reduce the complexity for the 3 general releases provided by Veeva. eTMF, Startup, Monitoring, Site Connect, Feasibility components are already live. The latest Gemstone „Ruby“ went live over Eastern (April 23). IRIS is now retired, and Issue Management, Monitoring, and Study Risk Management and Study Training are available in Gemstone with more capabilities to come. Gemstone interfaces with over 50 systems and is closely integrated with RAVE, RAVEN, BRAVE and other systems. Gemstone provides a modern technology foundation with API capability, allowing connection via the Integration Hub, a bespoke PaaS solution with a unified data integration layer. As not all systems are as advanced, the Integration Hub provides a database facade that allows backward compatibility to cater to those legacy systems.

At the Fiesta de las funciones, we celebrated DS&AI's teams, sub-teams and projects in a dynamic, interactive poster session where everyone presented their work, and attendees could collect a POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol) for each poster they visited, 20 posters and 21 POAPs. The POAPs served as a digital certificate of attendance and allowed attendees to gamify their participation in the event while getting to know a new digital technology. Utility was given to the person that collected the most POAPs, in the form of a prize given at the end of the event. Additionally, at the end of the poster session, there was a quiz that allowed attendees to test their knowledge of the presented posters. This quiz was a fun way to encourage attendees to interact with the posters and learn more about the various data science, ML and AI work currently going on in DS&AI. It was a great opportunity for Bayer DS&AI colleagues to interact and get to know each other and what we do, and to set the foundations for future collaborations.
