EXPANDED.ART is pleased to present BEASTS by IRA GREENBERG in partnership with EMERGENT PROPERTIES on view at the gallery from 29 MARCH - 16 APRIL. BEASTS will include an expansive universe created by the artistās code and generative AI, and drawings exploring generative systems by hand. "My life is pretty much controlled by beasts, it always has been. I engage with beasts directly and very physically in my space: cats, dogs, mice, pack rats, horses, birds, squirrels, dragonflies, bees, cockroaches, fire ants. Other interactions are less tangible: parasites, bacteria, viruses. Some beasts are not physical at all. Yet their presence is equally impactful (maybe more so). When I think about my family history and stories of urgent emigration, fleeing war zones with protracted dislocations, Iām reminded of other kinds of beasts, those who impact outer and inner lives. This Generative AI long-form project explores beasts as both physical manifestations of natureās generative power and beasts lurking within, including within the collective unconscious." ā Ira Greenberg With a background combining art and computer science, Ira Greenberg has been a painter, programmer, professor, and author. He is Director of the Center of Creative Computation and Professor at SMU, with a joint appointment in the Meadows School of the Arts and the Lyle School of Engineering and wrote the first major reference on the Processing programming language, and two subsequent creative coding texts.
On the occasion of Herbert W. Frankeās solo exhibition CODED BEAUTY, Anika Meier will be in conversation with Susanne PƤch, Estate of Herbert W. Franke and wife of the artist, and thefunnyguys, generative art collector, co-founder of Le Random, a recently launched digital generative art institution. They will discuss early computer art, the history of generative art and the intersection of art, technology and science. Herbert W. Franke was a pivotal figure in the development of digital art, which he helped to shape over the next few decades as an artist, writer and curator. As early as 1957, Franke proved in a book entitled ART AND CONSTRUCTION (Verlag F. Bruckmann, Munich) that technology "opens up undreamed-of new artistic territory". He has consistently explored new territory with analytical methods and the assistance of machines for over 70 years, looking into the future of digital art until he arrived in the metaverse as an artist and curator in the early 2000s.

In collaboration with the estate, EXPANDED.ART is pleased to present the solo show CODED BEAUTY by Herbert W Franke. The show is comprised of eight works of Frankeās series MATH ART created between 1980 and 1995, early generative photographs from the 1950s, his Biennale serigraphy including QUADRATE (1969/70) and further serigraphies. Herbert W. Franke held the belief that the beauty of structures shown in visual arts is founded on mathematical codes throughout his entire career. He spent a lifetime in search of them. In the 1950s, he started generating art based on mathematical principles, which led to his first pieces, LICHTFORMEN and OSZILLOGRAMME, and finally used computer programs from the 1960s on. He began working on the enormous body of work MATH ART in 1980 with the programmer Horst Helbig. Over the course of 15 years, he methodically analyzed the mathematical conceptual worlds, from algebra to stochastics, for the aesthetic component. Even to the spectator who is unfamiliar with mathematics, the opulent visualizations reveal quite varied aesthetic frameworks.

DYOR (Do Your Own Research) is a dictum of the crypto scene. The principle is that one should do one's own investigation rather than believing all that is read. The exhibition reveals to visitors what is, for many, a new world: art in the context of blockchain and NFTs. Curated by Nina Roehrs, DYOR focusses on artists, projects and platforms that have had a significant influence on how the crypto art scene has developed and is today. This DYOR ā POAP can be collected when visiting the exhibition in Zürich. Created by Andreas Gysin (aka ertdfgcvb)
