Watch POAP mints live!

Thank you for being part of the very first Yearly Thing 2025 — a curated collection of 324 links from Weekly Thing issues 306-336, organized into ten themed chapters covering the year's most compelling ideas in technology, culture, and digital life. The Yearly Thing is an artifact: a way to hold a year of the internet in your hands while the links themselves inevitably rot. This POAP is its digital twin — proof that you were here, that you collected the 2025 edition, and that you're part of the Weekly Thing community. One physical artifact. One digital collectible. Both yours to keep.

You walked away from the corporate feed trough. You ripped your voice out of the algorithm's claws. That took guts. That took conviction. That's punk! The IndieWeb isn't some polished product you buy with a tap. It's you, your words, your server, your turf. It's raw HTML and full-throated autonomy. This isn't about metrics or brand deals -- it's about owning your damn voice. If you've ever looked at those social media sugar traps and said, "No thanks, I'm not a product," then congratulations -- you're part of the resistance. We need digital buttons, badges like the ones we used to stab into our jean jackets -- statements of identity, rebellion, belonging. This POAP? It's not just a collectible. It's a battle patch. A symbol. A nod to the hard-headed, soft-hearted punks building the web they want to live in. It started with Jamie Thingelstad screaming the truth from his blog: IndieWeb is Punk [1]. Then others joined the chorus [2] and even sang along [3], and Jim Mitchell did what punks do -- he made a damn shirt [4]. So slap that badge on your digital vest. Wear it like blood, sweat, and static. You're not just on the web -- you are the web! This is a special token to commemorate the Seven Year Anniversary of the Weekly Thing by Jamie Thingelstad, established in 2017. This token is for subscribers of the Weekly Thing as of May 13th, 2024 and was distributed directly via claim codes in Weekly Thing 288. The art for this POAP was created by Daniel Sheldon (danielsheldon.eth) who I discovered via NiftyInk. Daniel found inspiration in the content of the Weekly Thing including travel, art, crypto, markets, theater, and tech. There is a peeled lemon as a memento mori, a reminder of impermanence. The quill represents knowledge and the sharing thereof. The layers that make up the background are made of photos of major tech hub cities like Tokyo and New York with filters and effects and an overlay in the shape of The Son of Man by Magritte, which was meant to be a silhouette and more about outward looking but also self-reflection. The Treachery of Images on the table (this is not a pipe) also by Magritte which is about NFTs and crypto, things not being what you think they are but also being so much more because of the power of ideas. https://weekly.thingelstad.com https://www.thingelstad.com https://danielsheldon.co.za https://nifty.ink/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Son_of_Man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Treachery_of_Images https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/René_Magritte Five Year POAP: https://collectors.poap.xyz/drop/44270 Six Year POAP: https://collectors.poap.xyz/drop/126001
