This northern Italian Lago scene depicts, in Michelle’s own words, “A time for lunch," as several families seem to be gathering and joyfully sharing meals beneath the bright sunlight. Once again, she graces her canvas with European architecture, with additional specific detail to the tall trees, as well as the fence in the distance which conveys a remarkable depth of space. Herein is depicted El Morro, the historical landmark in Cuba. Named after the three biblical magi as the “Castle of the Three Wise Men of the Rock" ("Morro Castle"), the fortress guards the entrance into Havana bay. The design was created by engineer Batista Antonelli and built in 1589. This mighty structure, symbolic of Cuba’s resilience, has endured oscillating historical moments of conquest, colonialism, dictatorship, and revolution for over 531 years. Michelle stated many times that her artwork will also last for over five hundred years. Michelle portrayed the precise detail of the stone blocks of the fort, which affix it sturdily onto the cliff.
