"I can be your hero, baby, I can kiss away the pain" (Enrique Iglesias) February 27th 2002, day four of the Hockey World Championships. Believe it or not, again a hot and super humid day in Kuala Lumpur. GAMETHREE of German national hockey team against the red shirts - playing in white - from Spain. Kick off at 4:05 pm, and around minute 20 Bukit Jalil wittnessed a prime example of an asian thunderstorm. Game suspended, 32 mins music time, Enrique… After 70 weird minutes with only two late goals from Michel (68th) and Domke (70th) the scoreboard is negative. Spain won the game… but who's gonna win the championship?! Enrique is not going to kiss that pain away… Booma Ye!
"So what. Let's just win all upcoming games." That's Germans reaction to the first loss in 50 matches the day before versus Spain. February 28th 2002, GAMEFOUR against European neighbour Belgium in the Asian heat of Bukit Jalil. Kick off @8:05 pm made it a little easier, only +/- 30° C. And Germans reaction on the green astro turf was even sharper. Biederlack (24th), Reinelt (27th), and Michel (54th) set the score to three, Belgium zero. Milestone accomplished, rest day, booma ye!
March Madness, part one… It's March 3rd 2002, side pitch of Bukit Jalil, early hours, thus human weather conditions, and the Germans are hot as frying fat. After morning fitness routine in KLCC Park right to the call of the muezzin GAMEFIVE kicks off at 8:05am. The Black Sticks a.k.a. New Zealand start with a Haka (which looks pretty funny performed by field hockey players) and keep their defense tight and controlled. Only Michel (33rd) and Bechmann (60rd) make it to the scoreboard. "Men leap over where the hedge is lower" - (Law of least effort), or as we say in German: "A good horse only jumps as high as it has to". Gimme the next. Booma ye!
Another day in the tropical heat of Kuala Lumpur. February 25th 2002, second day of the World Hockey Championship 2002. The German hockey squad faces the team from South Africa in GAMETWO. Usually not an oponent to worry about, too many times we have already taken them to the cleaners in prep games. And they did it again. Germany three, South Africa nil. Thx... Goals by the deadly "Twin Terrors" Domke (16th/62nd) and Reinelt (21st). Two games, six points. Booma ye!
On February 24th 2002 the World Hockey Championship in Kuala Lumpur kicked off. Venue for this ground breaking event was the Stadium Hoki Nasional Bukit Jalil - a magnificent stadium with a capacity of 18.000 spectators. Germany faced the lions from Argentina in their GAMEONE in pool A. Face off was at 6:05 pm, at +/- 34° C and a sensed humidity of around 172%. Puh... The German squad finished winning by five goals to two. With Bechmann (25th), Wess (32nd), Wein (34th), Michel (39th) and Witthaus (62nd) Germany put five different scorers on the billboard. Fantastic start for Germany!
On February 25th 2002 the World Hockey Championship started for the German team with GAME ONE against South Africa. It was 6:05h in the afternoon when the ball started to roll in the Stadium Hoki Nasional Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur. Germany finished winning 3 goals to zero. Scorers where Domke (16th/65th) and Reinelt (21st). Fantastic start for Germany!!
