Disruptive technologies such as blockchain are finding many useful applications in society, but it remains to be seen if it will contribute to making global value chains more efficient and environmentally sustainable, or what risks may emerge. Some believe that the volatility in cryptocurrencies, lack of clarity on what ownership of NFTs mean, will limit digital tokens to the tech-savvy in advanced economies. Others believe that digital tokens are key to expanding economic opportunities for a wider section of society.
